Gele Mona Lisa is my reinterpretation of one of the most recognizable paintings in art history. By reimagining the Mona Lisa as a Black woman adorned with a richly sculpted gele and hand embroidered beadwork, I reclaim a space where African identity, beauty, and craftsmanship are celebrated within the canon
... of classical art.
The gele is more than a headwrap, it is a powerful cultural symbol of elegance, pride, resilience, and heritage. The intricate bead embroidery reflects my dual practice as both a visual artist and bead artist, blurring the line between painting and textile embellishment. Each bead is intentionally placed to add texture, light, and depth, transforming the surface into an object that invites both visual and tactile appreciation.
