My name is David Okoi. I am a Nigerian figurative painter from Cross River State whose work explores the emotional architecture of human existence through the medium of oil on canvas. Rooted in realism yet deeply psychological in approach, my paintings delve into the unspoken narratives carried within the body — the quiet tensions, vulnerabilities, hopes, and memories revealed through facial expression, gesture, and presence.
Centered largely on the Black experience, my work examines identity, intimacy, silence, and emotional inheritance, portraying Black subjects not merely as figures to be observed, but as vessels of layered humanity and interior life. My compositions become spaces where stillness speaks, inviting viewers into moments of reflection, connection, and emotional recognition.
Through a sensitive interplay of light and shadow, I create works that transcend physical representation, transforming everyday moments into profound studies of emotion and psychological depth.
Each painting serves as both portrait and testimony — an exploration of the invisible forces that shape how we carry ourselves, relate to others, and exist within the world.
Artist Statement
My work explores the quiet language of human emotion through figurative oil painting, centering the depth, vulnerability, and complexity of the Black experience. I am drawn to the unspoken — the emotions carried in a gaze, a gesture, a moment of stillness. Through realism and the interplay of light and shadow, I create intimate visual narratives that invite viewers to reflect on identity, memory, connection, and the emotional truths that exist beneath the surface.
