I am Emmanuel Chizaram Okereafor (Emmax Arts) a visual artist from Umuohiagu, Imo State, now based in Port Harcourt. I studied Applied Arts at UNN, where uli tradition and photography shaped how I see.
My work is Afro-Surrealistic Expressionism: painting, digital art, and drawing built around one recurring mark, the spiral face. It erases what makes us different so what is left is what makes us the same "the working mind". I work mostly in violet, yellow s, orange and cream, with forms and characters pulled from Igbo heritage, pointed at power, corruption, and the slow erasure of memory, especially what the Niger Delta has lost and is still losing.
Fela and Achebe are in everything I make, the refusal to look away, the insistence that the past doesn't stay past.
I've shown at Quintessence Gallery (Lagos), the Centre for Memories (Enugu), and Obiora Odechukwu Art Gallery (UNN), and submitted work internationally through Saatchi Art. Every piece asks the same question: what is actually there once you strip the surface off.
