JOHNSON CHUKS VICTOR (ORWELL ART)

Johnson Chuks Victor, popularly known by his artistic name Orwell Art, is a Nigerian multidisciplinary artist based in Lagos, Nigeria, whose practice is rooted in imagination, resilience, experimentation, and a profound appreciation for the extraordinary beauty found within ordinary life.

With over eighteen years of artistic practice, Orwell Art began his creative journey at the age of 15, growing up in Ajegunle, an urban community known for its vibrant street culture and challenging social realities. Raised in a family of twelve—his parents and ten children—life was far from easy. Following the loss of one of his sisters, the family became eleven, consisting of his parents, three girls, and six boys, including Johnson.

Growing up in a financially disadvantaged environment exposed him to the realities of hardship from an early age. Yet, within those difficult circumstances, he discovered something that would become a powerful source of hope: art. Drawing and painting gave him a way to escape limitations, express his imagination, and visualize the extraordinary beauty he saw within his surroundings and the world beyond.

His environment became his first classroom. The people, streets, nature, children, animals, rocks, flowers, water, sky, and countless ordinary moments around him became sources of inspiration. Where others might see only the struggles and imperfections of everyday life, Orwell Art learned to look deeper—to discover beauty, meaning, emotion, and possibility.

His journey as an artist was not an easy one. In the early stages, many people struggled to understand his vision or recognize the possibilities within his creativity. Nevertheless, he continued to develop his craft, allowing persistence, observation, experimentation, and imagination to shape his artistic identity. What began as a means of finding hope gradually evolved into a lifelong commitment to artistic expression.

Today, Orwell Art is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice encompasses abstract painting, sculpture, and mixed-media experimentation. He primarily creates abstract paintings with pronounced 3D effects and tactile textures, producing works that are intended not merely to be seen but to be experienced. His works invite viewers to engage with texture, depth, form, movement, and emotion.

Working with acrylic, oil, charcoal, mixed media, sculpture, and other materials, he is particularly recognized for his creative manipulation and application of materials to produce distinctive effects and textures. His approach allows ordinary materials to become vehicles for extraordinary visual experiences.

Orwell Art has also explored portraiture, creating paintings of notable African personalities and entertainers such as Burna Boy, Davido, and Tiwa Savage through indirect artistic projects. These works form part of his broader exploration of identity, culture, personality, and visual expression.

At the heart of his artistic philosophy is his fascination with the extraordinary beauty of ordinary people and the world around them. His work seeks to transform everyday observations into visual experiences that encourage viewers to pause, connect, reflect, and see familiar things differently.

His story is inseparable from his art. The difficult environment in which he grew up did not define the limits of his imagination; instead, it became part of the foundation upon which his creativity was built. The ordinary circumstances of his childhood were gradually fine-tuned through perseverance, imagination, and artistic discipline into the artist he is today.

Through his work, Orwell Art hopes to make people feel connected, inspired, amazed, and emotionally moved. His ultimate pursuit is to demonstrate that extraordinary beauty can emerge from ordinary places, ordinary materials, and ordinary beginnings—when viewed through the power of imagination.
