Artist bio
Nichodemus Chisom is a contemporary Artist based in Lagos Nigerian whose work explores the quiet power of Black identity, sovereignty, and cultural memory through emotionally charged portraiture. Drawing inspiration from African heritage, ancestral symbolism, and classical portrait traditions, her paintings present figures that exist between royalty and remembrance calm, commanding, and deeply symbolic.
The name “Chisom” comes from the Igbo language of southeastern Nigeria, meaning “God follows me” or “I walk with God’s presence.” This spiritual undertone subtly echoes throughout her work, where silence becomes sacred and presence itself becomes power. Her art often reflects themes of dignity, resilience, femininity, and the reclaiming of African identity beyond colonial narratives.
Known for her signature use of deep obsidian skin tones, textured monochrome rendering, cowry adornments, and luminous contemporary compositions, Nichodemus creates what can be described as Contemporary African Sovereign Portraiture a style that merges African symbolism with the grandeur of classical portrait painting. Her subjects are often portrayed with direct gazes and minimal but meaningful elements such as cowries, African-inspired hairstyles, gold detailing, and regal clothing, each acting as visual archives of memory, ancestry, and identity.
Through works such as Royal Blood,Stolen History (25) , The Ebony Duchess (26), and Heir to the Silent Throne (26), Nichodemus Chisom builds a visual language centered on stillness, elegance, and emotional authority. Her paintings are not merely portraits; they are monuments to Black beauty, cultural endurance, and silent sovereignty.
